ᴛʜᴇ ᴛᴀʟᴇ ᴏғ ᴛʜᴇ ʙᴀᴍʙᴏᴏ ᴄᴜᴛᴛᴇʀ**.**

• an old man and an old woman were poor bamboo cutters. when the old man cut a bamboo one day, a little baby girl came from the stalk. she was the size of his thumb.
• taking her back home, he and his wife decided to name her nayotake no kaguya-hime; or, kaguya. she would be their one and only daughter. they weren't sure how long she was going to live, where she came from, and who she was, but they wanted to take care of her for as long as she and they could live.
• however, the girl grew up very quickly. within three months she looked to be the age of a young adult woman. despite her physical body looking like an adult, she did not act like one. she was very naive, but the man and woman tried their best with their limited knowledge to teach her and raise her.
• the family grew rich since the old man found a small gold nugget inside each bamboo stalk he cut.
• when kaguya became of age, many people started to hear of her beauty. scared of the outside world, as kaguya had never really explored outside of their small home. her parents tried their best to protect her, to keep her existence secret, but after kaguya had gone outside without their permission, her existence became known to the entire village, and eventually, the kingdom.
• kaguya and her family are visited personally by the emperor of japan. he does not ask for her hand in marriage, but asks for them to keep in contact. kaguya rejects his proposal of marriage, but she stays in contact with him as he is the only person to make her smile that is not her parents.
• the two send letters to each other for two years before the emperor comes back to her village and proposes to her. kaguya rejects once more, much to both of their sadness, and she states she does not come from japan and it was not right for them to marry.
• he continues to stay with her for a few days after his proposal. she cries every night that he is there, gazing upon the moon and hiding away from it.
• when her parents and the emperor ask her what's wrong, she refuses to say so. on the day the emperor must leave, kaguya tells her parents what's wrong.
  • she had been sent to earth to be punished for a crime she cannot say, to form inevitable attachments to humans before having to go back to the moon. now that she has formed those attachments, both to her parents and the emperor, she must go back. the gold was sent to help with kaguya's upkeep.
• her parents stayed up all night with her to make sure she doesn't leave, to keep her home, but they inevitably fall asleep, and kaguya escapes out into their property and is met with the moon celestial guards to take her away. the entire land of japan is blinded by this magnificent light, alerting the emperor of her departure. she writes notes of apology to her parents, the friends she made, and the emperor. she gives the emperor an elixir of immortality.
• her parents become so sad they get sick, and the emperor burns kaguya's note and the elixir on the tallest mountain in japan in hopes that she will read it.
• kaguya returns to the capital city of the moon, or, tsuki no miyako.

ᴛʜᴇ ᴛᴀʟᴇ ᴏғ ᴘʀɪɴᴄᴇss ᴋᴀɢᴜʏᴀ**.**

• the moon people are ancient being presiding humans, living on the moon since their creation, and have created humans in their likeness. their goal, as the moon people, was to watch over and guide humanity through their lifespan and study it. however, they were to never interfere.
• kaguya was born long before she was found in the bamboo stalk. ahe was born before many humans could remember, she was the princess of the moon. she had a mother who would live another millennia as the ruler.
  • kaguya had no father. kaguya’s mother became pregnant with kaguya when a small comet had come to the moon, a messenger from the brightest star in the universe. kaguya was born from that comet, entirely in her mother’s likeness, but with unbridled beauty.
  • because of this uncharacteristic birth (where moon royalty births were usually done by handpicking from the star), kaguya was prone to cold skin and sensitivities unlike any other person of the moon or human being. because of this, she was often kept within the walls of the moon palace.
• despite her condition, kaguya was revered as the most favourite princess of all moon royalty. her beauty and her kindness was well known throughout the kingdom. she had many suitors for marriage but it was uncommon for moon royalty to marry.
• and despite her isolation, kaguya loved the earth. unlike the moon, it was warm and lush, beautiful in all the vibrant colours that was not the ice-cold silver kaguya was used to. in her mind, the stories of earth were full of colours she couldn’t comprehend. kaguya wanted to experience the warmth of the earth and the sun for herself.
• one of her suitors was a researcher who would often go back and forth from the earth and the moon. one night, kaguya snuck away and asked if she could go with him to earth.
• while kaguya felt nothing for him, the two were there for only a night. he took her to the highest point of the land, where the heavens and the earth could touch, mt. fuji. she ended up escaping his watch, rushing down to the capital city of the kingdom she was in. due to her celestial powers, she was quick. she felt invigorated by the warmth of the land.
• she ended up in the grounds of the palace, where she met a half-awake emperor. she thought he was wonderfully handsome, with his bronze skin and dark hair. unlike anyone she had ever seen before, too used to the opaline skin and ivory hair. he was nice to her too. so, she plucked a single white egret orchid, or a 鷺草 (sagisō) and handed it to him.
  • “may my thoughts follow you into your dreams.”
• when she finally got home, kaguya was punished for escaping, and the researcher executed, and treason of the moon royalty for interfering with human life. her punishment to return to earth.

ᴛʜᴇ ᴛᴀʟᴇ ᴏғ ᴊᴜɴɢ sᴏᴏᴊᴜɴɢ**.**

• before kaguya was taken out of her fable, she had met and become friends with someone who called themselves “usagi”. granted a spot on the moon alongside the royalty, she was once a rabbit who had been given the form of a celestial being. the only one who could understand kaguya, the two became close friends.
• however, when the rip happened, usagi was the first one to disappear. riddled with fear, sadness, grief, kaguya worried she would be the last one left on earth. a war was broken out from earth, calling for the halt of the moon kingdom’s interference of their technology and civilization. many of the beloved people she loved died, including her mother, but kaguya managed to escape, but she ended up escaping her fable.
• lost in a world she didn’t know, kaguya was forced to take up the name “jung soojung”. while kaguya— no, soojung, was happy to be on whatever was considered to be “earth”, she felt lonely. that was until she met usagi, now known as heejin. both of them were unsure of what to do with themselves, so heejin used the hobby she took up while on the moon, of making rice cakes. she learned how to bake using the ingredients available to her, and they were able to open their own cafe: tsuki miyako, after their “home”.

₀1. » Qᴜɪᴄᴋ ꜱᴜᴍᴍᴀʀʏ.

soojung is a little shy but is very polite, to the point of robotics. many may see her as cold and distance, but she is very good at rehearsing how to play things nice and polite, but not sure how to add that emotional aspect to it. she can keep up conversations but prefers to listen rather than speak for herself. she likes to learn new things about people so she isn’t introverted in the sense she doesn’t like to be with new people, but in that she is often rejected from doing so or is unsure how to proceed after certain points.

₀2. » ʟɪᴋᴇs ᴀɴᴅ ᴅɪsʟɪᴋᴇs.

ʟɪᴋᴇs.

learning about earth, sweet things, most animals but rabbits and cats are her favourite, summer and spring, gardening and botany, tea, the smell of coffee, journalling, calligraphy.

ᴅɪsʟɪᴋᴇs.

bitter tasting things especially coffee, animal meat, winter and the cold (though she can easily withstand it), excessive exercise, the sun (she likes the sun, but gets burnt easily), lots of noise.

₀3. » ᴀᴄᴛɪᴠɪᴛɪᴇs.

ᴛᴀʟᴇɴᴛs.

many would call her ability to withstand extreme colds a talent, soojung just thinks of it as another facet to her body. she is able to recall many plants by their names, medicinal functions, and what they mean to her personally. she is good with calligraphy in japanese, korean, and english. she has gotten very good at being a barista, as she can make most drinks needed for the cafe and likes to think up new ones.

ʜᴏʙʙɪᴇs.

in her spare time, she likes to go for walks around the city and visit parks and plant stores, take notes on the plants she sees and if she recognizes them from when she was in her fable. along this, she likes to learn other things about earth that she couldn’t when she was on the moon. her interests are very simple, but she has a lot of fun with them. she really likes to think of new drink recipes or find some online. she likes to help where she can with heejin’s cooking and baking.

₀4. » ᴍᴏᴛɪᴠᴀᴛɪᴏɴs.

to take control of her own life and live as she pleases, find love where she wants it and experience new things. she wants to protect the ones she loves and spend as much time as she can with them. she wishes to completely cut ties with her past and live fully and completely as jung soojung.

soojung tries her best not to, but she lives a lot in her own past. she worries people will leave her, either by the force of others, their own choices, or because she will have to go somehow, someway. she loves a little too hard, but is riddled with an anxiety of the future with those she loves because of her past.

soojung has conflicting feelings towards her mother. her only tie to a real family, soojung misses her as a mother figure deeply… but as she learns more and more about motherly love on earth, she realizes her mother was truly never a mother. soojung resents her for everything she put her through, but there is a part of her that misses her mother because she wants her to be like every other mother out there.

although not related by blood or species, heejin has always been like family to soojung, like a sister she never had. the two playfully bicker at times as well as fight, but they are always there for each other. soojung wouldn’t know what to do without heejin.

emperor of japan: ex-lover : from the fable

the only person soojung has loved with every fibre of her being. while it started as an infatuation from a chance meeting deep within the night, as they got to know each other while she was on earth, she couldn’t help but fall deeply in love with him. had she not been from the moon and just a commoner like everyone else, she would’ve never rejected his proposal. she misses him most days, but does her best not to think on whether or not he is alive.
